Something happened. Maybe recently, maybe years back.
And it still has a hold on you.
That is what trauma does. It lingers. It turns up when you least expect it, in your sleep, your mood, the way your body reacts to things that should feel ordinary.
You do not have to carry it alone.
I am Nigel Sutcliffe, a BACP-registered counsellor working across East Kent. I help people work through trauma at a pace that feels safe, in person or online.
Trauma is not always loud. Sometimes it is quiet and stubborn, and easy to explain away.
You might notice:
Any of that sound familiar? You do not need one single, obvious event for it to count. Trauma can build up slowly, over years.
I use an integrative approach. In plain terms, I shape the sessions around you rather than fitting you to one fixed method.
For some people that means talking things through, slowly, with someone who will not flinch.
For others, it means EMDR.
We work out what helps as we go. And we never rush the parts that feel hard.
I see clients face-to-face across East Kent, including Deal, Dover and Canterbury.
Would you rather stay home? Online sessions work well for trauma, and some people find them easier to start with. You can begin online and move to in-person later, or the other way round. Whatever suits you.
The first session is just a conversation.
You tell me what has brought you here. You share as much or as little as you want. There is no pressure to relive anything, and nothing you have to be ready to say.
By the end, you will have a sense of whether it feels right. That part matters most. Trauma work only helps when you trust the person sitting opposite you.
The first step is usually the hardest one. By reading this, you have already taken half of it.
Book a session or get in touch, and we will talk it through.
If it still affects you, it counts. You do not need to measure your experience against anyone else’s, and you do not need a diagnosis to come.
No. You share what you choose to. EMDR in particular needs far less description than people expect.
It depends on you and what you are working through. A single recent event might take a few sessions. Something longer-standing usually takes more. We review it together as we go.
Yes. I work face to face across Deal, Dover and Canterbury, and online across Kent and further out. Both work well.
I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, with full insurance and regular supervision.
We go at your pace, always. You can pause, slow down or change direction at any time. You stay in control.
